Duck Inn Trail
Trail Type: Easy | Loop | ~1 mile
Best For: Birdwatching, water views, quick scenic strolls
One of the most popular trails on the island, Duck Inn Trail is a gentle loop that leads you through woodland and out to expansive marsh views. The path is mostly flat and accessible, making it ideal for families and casual walkers.
Interpretive signs along the way highlight the island’s ecology and migratory bird patterns. Keep an eye out for bald eagles overhead, great blue herons along the shoreline, and osprey nesting in warmer months. The observation platform offers a peaceful place to pause and take in the sweeping views of the Chester River.
Don’t Miss: Early morning light over the marsh, it’s a photographer’s dream.

Tundra Swan Boardwalk
Trail Type: Easy | Boardwalk | Short out-and-back
Best For: Wildlife viewing, accessible walk, sunset views
Short but stunning, the Tundra Swan Boardwalk extends out into the marsh, bringing you face-to-face with the island’s tidal landscape. In winter, migrating tundra swans gather here in impressive numbers, filling the air with their distinctive calls.
Even outside of swan season, the boardwalk offers panoramic marsh views and excellent opportunities to spot waterfowl and shorebirds.
Bring binoculars! You’ll be surprised how much wildlife is just beyond the grasses.

BayView Trail

Trail Type: Moderate | Loop | ~2.5 miles
Best For: Longer hikes, solitude, Chesapeake Bay views
If you're looking to stretch your legs, BayView Trail offers a longer walk through wooded habitat before opening up to breathtaking Chesapeake Bay shoreline. The mix of forest shade and open beach makes this trail especially enjoyable in spring and fall.
You may find yourself completely alone along the sandy shoreline, save for the sound of lapping waves and distant birds. It’s a reminder of how wild and untouched parts of the Eastern Shore still are.
Good to Know: Sections can be breezy, dress in layers, especially near the water.
